Hobbies 4 Kids ~ Junior cricket in Surrey for boys and girls

There is a very strong junior cricket programme in Surrey, which is co-ordinated from he Oval by the Surrey Cricket Board (SCB)in liason wih the various local Cricket Clubs. The programme is set out on the Surrey Cricket Club website to bring together cricket in the community with the performance cricket of District Cricket (from Under 10 to Under 14), Surrey Cricket Club - Age Group County Cricket sides (Under 9,U10,U11,U12, U13,U14, U15 and U17) leading through to the Surrey Cricket Club - Academy side (to Under 19) .

The Surrey Cricket Board also run Junior Development Winter Cricket Coaching Programmes from Under 6 to Under 10, which is open to all and feeds into the Age Group selection process. At age 11 and beyond Winter Cricket Nets organised by the Surrey Cricket Board are by invitation only.

The two County indoor cricket coaching facilities at the Ken Barrington Cricket Centre at the Oval and at Surrey Cricket Centre, Burpham, Guildford , run an extensive programme of junior cricket courses and net sessions and individual cricket coaching.

Competitive cricket at Club level is organised through the entry of teams into the major cricket leagues which are the West Surrey Colts League for teams in the West of the county and the North, East and Central Surrey Colts League (NEC) for teams to the East of the county.Various Cup Cricket Competitions at some age groups (U11, U3 and U15) are also run on a local, county-wide and national level. An increasing number of Girls Junior Cricket teams are being fomed from U11 upwards. At the younger ages able girls will play in cricket teams with the boys.

The starting point for players new to cricket is to Join a local Cricket Club with a thriving Colts Cricket Section. Most Cricket Clubs take boys and girls from age 7 into their coaching sessions and junior team cricket starts at Under 9 (sometimes played with a soft ball). Hard ball cricket at Club level usually starts at Under 10 with the more able U9 players joining a team an age group higher to get earlier "hard ball" cricket experience.

There are many good adult cricket clubs in Surrey which offer a good Colts cricket set-up as Clubs. A list of Clubs by Council District is set out below.
