Junior Golf Competitions

For Junior Golfers - Age 6 to 10

Younger juniors who are proficient enough to begin to enter competitions can participate into some of the nationally run tournaments and programmes.

Two worth checking out are :

HSBC Wee Wonders an Annual National Tournament for Boys and Girls in Age Group bands from age 5 to age 12 (Ages 5/6 ; Ages 7/8 ; Ages 9/10 and Ages 11/12). There will be a qualifying event near you leading up to a Grand Final with the winner at each age group participating in an international event.

Young Masters Golf A National programme aimed at junior golfers up to the age of 16. YMG Academies are based at certain Golf Clubs in each County. The website is a comprehensive guide to YMG activities and competitions including a list of Golf Clubs which run YMG prigrammes.

For Junior Golfers - Age 11 to 17

Once a junior has joined a golf club with a good junior section there will be regular Club Competitions for juniors. For those junior golfers who wish to progress beyond club competitions there are an extensive programme of Junior Opens in each County which accept entries from non members. To find out more about Junior Opens visit the County Golf Unions websites or ask the Junior Organiser at your local club - they should hold applications forms for most Junior Opens, which take place from Easter through to September each year..

For elite junior golfers who progress down to low handicaps for their age group there are County representative golf for boys from Under 14 through to Under 18. Girls teams are also run at Under 18 in most Counties.

There are two major age group Boys National Open Championships - the Reid Trophy for Under 14s (handicaps of 9 or better usually required) and the McGregor Trophy for Under 16s (handicaps of 4 or better usually required), both of which attract an international field - and a series of prestgious Championships for Under 18s (for juniors close to stractch) . Another prestigious competition for elite junior golfers is the Faldo Series , sponsored by Nick Faldo, which is open to boys and girls. Junior golfers compete in regional age group competitions leading to a Grand Final.
